The Volunteers of the Year for Family Emergency Shelter Coalition (FESCO) are John and Mary Milton. After a long and storied career in education, both John and Mary shifted their efforts to volunteering in the nonprofit sector. They have been actively involved with FESCO for 15 years.
John and Mary have helped organize volunteers to work beside them on repair and maintenance projects at FESCO sites. They were very active in helping to raise nearly $60,000 for this year’s walkathon. They helped with gathering pledges as well as volunteering all day at the event itself. For the last ten years, the Milton’s took the lead in FESCO’s Backpack Giveaway. They solicited donations, contacted FESCO residents and alumni, secured a facility, and recruited volunteers to participate in giving away 200 backpacks, fully stocked with age appropriate school supplies. John and Mary also organized FESCO’s Adopt a Family program in 2013. They spent long hours working with the families, seeking corporate and local sponsors, and organizing volunteers in an effort to brighten the holiday season for those in need.
When not involved in some aspect of FESCO’s mission or stealing a minute or two of shut eye, the Miltons contribute to numerous other organizations in our community. They are both active members of Our Lady of Grace in Castro Valley. They have also participated in Project Literacy and packaged groceries for the Mercy Brown Bag Program and are regular contributors to their cause. As a musician, John has played in a variety of bands, lending his time and efforts to dozens of charitable causes. Every Thursday, both John and Mary help prepare and serve dinner for low income seniors at Strobridge Court Apartments.
FESCO is pleased to honor the Miltons for their active, hard-working, committed service to our agency.
