The 5th Annual Summer Concert Series kicked off on August 10th at Hayward Memorial Park. Every year the Hayward Area Recreational District and The Odd Fellows produce the concert series to benefit local nonprofit groups. The inaugural event of the summer saw FESCO as the beneficiary. The event itself is free. The Sycamore 129 Blues Band kicked off the music and celebrity chef Mark Salinas put his talents to use at the barbeque pit. Donations were taken for food as local folks danced to the tunes. Chris Marquis and Company kept the music rocking well past the anticipated end time. The event brought in over $600 in donations that were given directly to FESCO.
FESCO has been hard at work raising funds to support the very important programs we operate. The Children’s Support League (CSL) recently held its 26th annual Heart of the Home fundraiser. The funds are earmarked for distribution to agencies serving at-risk children in the East Bay. After careful consideration and review of all grant applications received, CSL has announced that FESCO will receive funding in the amount of $8,000.00!
In keeping with the good news, FESCO’s Executive Director, Gay McDaniel, and Program Director, Sarah Voit attended the Achieving Outcomes Celebration presented by Everyone Home. The event recognizes successful facilities that are leading the charge to eradicate homelessness. FESCO received five awards for its work at Les Marquis House and 3rd Street Apartments, as well as its Rapid Re-housing Program. The most important award was for the Program with Sustained Excellence. This is the fourth year in a row that FESCO has achieved this certificate for exits from literal homelessness to permanent housing.
The Shelter Shuffle is FESCO’s primary fundraising event of the year. Our success depends on the participation of event Sponsors, community groups and churches, and individuals, including those who walk, run, and shuffle – many with their dogs – around the paths at San Leandro’s Marina Park. The 17th Annual Shelter Shuffle Walkathon took place on May 3rd, 2014 at the San Leandro Marina. The beautiful view of the Bay once again enticed many to make their way to the event. Although it was a cold and windy morning, the camaraderie of the participants created a lively atmosphere. Assembly Member Bill Quirk spoke before Hayward city Council Member Barbara Halliday led the crowd in a countdown to see the walkers off.
The park’s newly renovated picnic area proved to be the perfect backdrop for the after-party BBQ. The FESCO Fun Zone had face painting, toy mustaches for the children (and adults!) and balloon animals. New for this year was the Knudsen’s Creamery Ice Cream Truck. They served up scoops of delicious ice cream and presented all of the donations back to FESCO. At the end of the day, the Shelter Shuffle Walkathon ended up being a terrifically fun event.
With the help of crucial community supporters, the 17th Annual Shelter Shuffle raised over $55,000. Family Emergency Shelter Coalition could not provide vital services and housing without the support of our community. The generous donations will help us continue our mission of helping homeless families move toward self sufficiency and ensure they can end their homelessness and have a place called home!
FESCO participated in a donation drive through a co-marketing effort with Rita’s Italian Ice on April 14th. The first 50 people that brought school supplies to donate to FESCO received a free ice as well as coupons for a free treat once a week for a year! The event was advertised locally in flyers and posters, g, social media campaigns, and a television advertisement on the Bravo channel! The event was a great success. People lined up at 5:00am and created quite a scene on Castro Valley Blvd. They filled a 55 gallon drum to the top with pencils, papers, rulers, calculators, and other school supplies.
On April 13th, FESCO Executive Director Gay McDaniel was a special guest on local radio station 96.5 KOIT. During the 30 minute segment, Gay spoke about the needs of homeless families, the services that we provide, and information about the upcoming Shelter Shuffle Walkathon fundraiser.
