We would like to say a huge thank you to Our Lady of The Rosary Catholic Church (OLR) for working so hard to raise funds for FESCO. Thank you to OLR’s Business Manager, Robert Clark, for taking the time to personally deliver a check for $5360 from their project “Little Houses for the Homeless Project”. Our Executive Director, Gay McDaniel was grateful to receive these funds on behalf of FESCO. Thank you OLR for supporting FESCO’s mission to end family homelessness!
During the holiday season, we see firsthand how fortunate we are to work in a community that understands the importance of making sure everyone has a home.
Every year, several groups and individuals contact us, eager to lend a helping hand. You bring donations of gift cards, food, clothing, and other urgent supplies our participants need. You also offer to volunteer in many different ways, including cooking meals for families at Banyan House, tutoring children in our programs, and sharing your professional expertise.
As we begin preparations for a new year, we want to thank you, and remind you that we still need your help.
It’s not too late to brighten the day of a child in one of our programs, or a parent wondering where they will sleep tomorrow.
We are beginning the collection of holiday donations and we need your support!
Adopt a Family: We are collecting special wishes from the men, women, and children who reside at Les Marquis emergency shelter and Banyan House. In addition, we are also collecting wishes from the low income families whom have recently exited and moved into their new homes. Wishes include shoes, favorite toy, book or game, new coat, or much needed household items. Please contact us to find out how you can make a special wish come true this holiday season.
Gift Cards: A donation of gift cards from stores such as Target, Wal-Mart, Big Lots, and local grocery stores can help families pick the items they need this winter. Cards between $10 and $50 are best, and can be mailed to our Administrative office at 21455 Birch St #5 Hayward, CA 94541. You can also drop off gift cards at the same address on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
A Gift in Honor: Is there someone in your family or a friend who is impossible to find a gift for? You can make a donation in their honor, and we’ll send them a special letter thanking them for the gift.
Monetary Donation: Make a contribution online and know that you will be helping to end homelessness in our community.
Keeping Families Together in Alameda County
Family Emergency Shelter Coalition (FESCO) was founded in 1986 by a coalition of area churches/community members to address their concerns about the growing number of families falling into homelessness in Mid-Alameda County with the mission to keep families together during their period of homelessness.
FESCO is currently comprised of over 24 churches/community members in Mid-Alameda County, most located/living/working in Hayward. FESCO serves low/extremely low-income homeless families with food, emergency, transitional, and permanent housing, and supportive services in furtherance of its mission to move these families toward self-sufficiency and permanent housing.
We are raising awareness and funds to support this remarkable organization continue providing these services to the homeless families in our community and our goal is to raise at least $500 so please donate today!
We have an immediate need for a volunteer to assist our Activity Leader with our children’s program on Monday and Wednesday evenings
from 6:45-8:15 . We are looking for an individual that can commit at least three months, and preferably 6-12 months to this program.
Our Shuffle sponsors are very special to us. Without the kindness and support of these companies and individuals the FESCO Shuffle event would not be able to take place.
Thank you again.
Three cheers to you all!

The Volunteers of the Year for Family Emergency Shelter Coalition (FESCO) are John and Mary Milton. After a long and storied career in education, both John and Mary shifted their efforts to volunteering in the nonprofit sector. They have been actively involved with FESCO for 15 years.
John and Mary have helped organize volunteers to work beside them on repair and maintenance projects at FESCO sites. They were very active in helping to raise nearly $60,000 for this year’s walkathon. They helped with gathering pledges as well as volunteering all day at the event itself. For the last ten years, the Milton’s took the lead in FESCO’s Backpack Giveaway. They solicited donations, contacted FESCO residents and alumni, secured a facility, and recruited volunteers to participate in giving away 200 backpacks, fully stocked with age appropriate school supplies. John and Mary also organized FESCO’s Adopt a Family program in 2013. They spent long hours working with the families, seeking corporate and local sponsors, and organizing volunteers in an effort to brighten the holiday season for those in need.
When not involved in some aspect of FESCO’s mission or stealing a minute or two of shut eye, the Miltons contribute to numerous other organizations in our community. They are both active members of Our Lady of Grace in Castro Valley. They have also participated in Project Literacy and packaged groceries for the Mercy Brown Bag Program and are regular contributors to their cause. As a musician, John has played in a variety of bands, lending his time and efforts to dozens of charitable causes. Every Thursday, both John and Mary help prepare and serve dinner for low income seniors at Strobridge Court Apartments.
FESCO is pleased to honor the Miltons for their active, hard-working, committed service to our agency.
